Bleed Cubbie Blue is the #5 Blogger for Pittsburgh Pirates
PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates have lost 81 games. With their next defeat, they will be assured of a losing season... for the 17th consecutive year. That will set a major league record; the current record, that the Pirates share, was set by the Phillies from 1933-48. Not only is it a record in baseball,...

LaRoche, Milledge, and Moss stagnate: -1-3 wins
All in all, I don't think it's impossible that the Bucs could even break their losing season streak, though I don't expect that. Even if they don't, I think they'll be a respectable mediocre team rather than a bad one.

P- Pedro Alvarez will bump Andy LaRoche to second base in June. Alvarez will be as good as advertised, hitting 30+ homers between AAA and the big leagues.
P- By season's end, the Bucs' farm system will be widely regarded as one of the best in baseball.

May there be many scenes like this today -- Cubs runners scoring.
Wuertz, for whom the Cubs have nothing to show, is 6-1 with a 3.00 ERA and a tidy WHIP (walks plus hits per 1 inning pitched) of 1.01 with Oakland. Heilman is 2-3 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.

(in Pittsburgh Has Been Good To The Cubs: Cubs vs. Pirates Preview, Tuesday 9/8, 6:05 CT)
PITTSBURGH -- As I noted yesterday, the Pirates have become the Cubs' favorite punching bag (well, they have for a lot of teams, but the Cubs in particular). The Cubs have now won 10 of the last 13 games between the two teams at PNC Park; 12 of the last 14 overall; are 21-6 against the Pirates sin...

(in Going For The Sweep: Cubs vs. Pirates Preview, Sunday 8/16, 1:20 CT)
At this writing I think the Pirates are going to finish the season with a worse record than the Nationals. With the Nats beating up on the Reds last night they are only 4.5 games behind the Pirates and Washington has some actual good young talent, particularly hitters. Since July 1 the Pirates a...

It's never a piece of cake with them," Gorzelanny said of his former club. "When I was there we always thought a lot of teams thought that about the Pirates, that they could just come in and sweep us, but there are some good players out there and they play hard. It's not going to be easy." The only cu...

Randy Wells started and defeated the Pirates on July 1 in Pittsburgh, but the Pirates have remade their team since then. Three of the starting eight that day aren't on the Pirates any more.

Ted Lilly has not faced the Pirates this year. Last year he was 2-0 with two no-decisions and an alarmingly high 5.09 ERA. Adam LaRoche is 5-for-12 (.417) with three doubles and a HR vs. Ted. Brandon Moss is 3-for-3 with a HR. The rest of the Pirates, he handles pretty well.

Interleague play is now over, except for the tentatively-but-not-officially-rescheduled-for-September-3 Cubs/White Sox game from the May 16 rainout. The Cubs are 6-8 in interleague this year, pending that game. Once again, the AL dominated interleague play. Only five NL teams finis...

(in How To Break An Eight-Game Losing Streak: Cubs vs. Pirates, Tuesday 5/26, 7:05 CT)
The 2006 Cardinals had two eight-game losing streaks and another of seven -- and that last streak came late in September and they almost blew a seven-game lead with 12 to play -- but they squeaked into the postseason and went 11-5 when it counted and won it all.

Ryan Dempster threw one of the best games of his 2008 season on April 8 in Pittsburgh, allowing only one hit over seven innings. Thanks to the bullpen (sound familiar?) the Cubs needed 15 innings to win that game. Dempster handles most of the Pirates pretty well; of their current roster only N...

(in The Astros Are The New Pirates: Cubs vs. Astros, Friday 5/15, 1:20 CT)
So, you might be asking, why are the Astros "the new Pirates"? Last year, the Cubs played Pittsburgh 12 times by early June. By the end of this series, presuming all three are played, eight of the Cubs' first 37 games will have been against Houston, and there is another three-game series betw...
A sampling of Pirates players, whose Q&A session was far kinder and gentler than the management discussion that followed. . . LaRoche on his brother, Adam: "I haven't talked to him since the day he was traded" last July. Such a kidder.
