Get a true HOF level ace at the top of the rotation Then as the economy continues to erode and attendance and concessions especially with teams not performing clubs will be pulling the plug faster....This is where an ace or RF'er or CF'er will emerge at the talent level the Cubs are seeking.

Van Dyke's article this morning where he discusses the Cubs and budget but also admits that the Cubs probably will be in the top 5 payroll teams this year offered an interesting that and other tidbits to the current front office thinking.

Notes: The Cubs will have a nighttime season opener, 6:05 Central time, at Houston on April 6. I have adjusted the countdown clock on the right sidebar and the game time on the left sidebar. There are 26 night games listed; the Cubs are permitted 30, by city ordinance. The ESPN Sunday night sche...

You can justifiably criticize Ed Lynch for most of his tenure as Cubs GM -- but in dumping Rojas, Brian McRae (who had also worn out his welcome in Chicago after two decent years in 1995 and 1996) and Turk Wendell to the Mets, Lynch made his best deal as GM, and acquired two players who played ke...

Verrrry sexay, and his 1959 was almost exactly the same. Mr. Cub won the MVP both those years, of course. Neither one was any better than 2005, so I can say with complete certainity that our guy, Mr. Lee, had one of the three greatest "clean" seasons in "modern Cubs history" (after Hack Wils...

The Arizona Diamondbacks swept the Cubs in three games as Piniella pulled Carlos Zambrano after six innings so he could save him for Game 4. Unfortunately, I guess the senile Lou Piniella didn't realize it was a best of five series and you have to win a game to get there. So the Cubs went home and...

Anyhow, I digress. Wood won the closer's job out of Spring Training and 65% of Cubdom assumed he would do a great job as closer. That's been the eternal dividends of those wonderful May 1998 starts. Kerry Wood has been the hope of this franchise for 11 years. The Franchise turned to him for game 3 o...

It begins before the season even starts, with Durbin meeting Cubs owner Charles W. Murphy in his ornate downtown Chicago office to sign a contract (for more money than Durbin, who was from a small town in Missouri, could have imagined). It takes you through the "Practice Season", which was h...

Friday, October 10, 2008 Stern endorses Cuban and so do I NBA Commissioner David Stern openly backed current Dallas Mavericks owner and potential Cubs buyer Mark Cuban as a legitimate candidate for the Major League franchise, but it's easy to see what he's really doing here. "[Baseball owners] should welcome him," said Stern in a recent media report. This is Stern's not-so-sly way of recommending a guy he's fined over $1.3 million over the course of the years for bitching at referees so he can unload him on a different league. Sure, to Stern he'd be a great owner in any league that will make him less visible in the NBA. I'm on to you, David Stern, but that's neither here nor there because I'd actually like to see Cuban calling the shots for the Cubs. H...

When Carlos Zambrano led the Cubs in no-hit fashion to their third straight win last night as the Phillies completed a four-game sweep of the Brewers, the National League Central Division race ended. A decision also needs to be made in right field, where Kosuke Fukudome has all but lost his starting role, which I certainly don't agree with. I know his bat hasn't been at all productive since the first half, but his glove has absolutely saved the Cubs a number of times. Had he not been in right against the Cardinals the other night to rob the Redbirds of a couple runs, we would have been talking about another blown lead rather than a close win.

Kevin wrote, "If they do manage to win the World Series, you'll talk about it for a few days. You'll then realize the suffering you get high on is gone." Yeah. For some, this is true. For the college kids who get too drunk to text their parents what time they'll be back at the Metra Station. For the family from Macomb who drove three hours just for a glimpse of Wrigley Field. For Mark Cuban. For the countless trixies who relentlessly unbutton the tops of their pink cub jerseys just in case WGN's cameras find them stumbling through the stands. For that guy in the stands who insists on blaming Steve Bartman. As for the postseason. Let's get past St. Louis first.

Thursday, September 4, 2008 Settle Down, Cubs Fans Cubs fans are genetically predispositioned to expect the worst. Not winning for a century will tend to do that to a fan base. But when looking at the current five-game losing streak and the arm problems of pitchers Carlos Zambrano and Rich H...

Thursday, August 28, 2008 Thank you, Cardinals As I sat last night intently watching MLB.com Gameday for the Cardinals-Brewers game, I realized the pennant race is officially on. This is the only time of year I'll pull for the Redbirds, and they certainly came through for the Cubs by salvag...
