Thursday, October 16, 2008 Blackhawks fire Savard after four (4) games The Blackhawks today announced the firing of head coach Denis Savard just four games into the 2008-09 campaign. Yeah, I also had to read the headline twice. I'm not even really sure what to write about this move because it's so puzzling. Maybe Savard will call Ned Yost tonight for a beer and a hug. They've played four games. Yes, they're 1-2-1 and in fourth place, but come on, they're a whopping one point out of first place. If you're not going to give the guy a chance this year, fire him well before the season starts. Don't do it the night after they get their first win and actually looked pretty decent on the ice for the first time this year. I've been more critical of the current state of this franchise than anyone I know. Ever since team president John McDonough came over from the Cubs, the Blackhawks have been all about marketing and improving their image without actually winning – something McDonough learned well with the other laughable franchise in this town. If you're one of the dumbass fans that started supporting this franchise again this year or last just because it found clever ways to ask you to come back, I really pity you. Now the players get to become familiar with a new coach – Joel Quenneville, who admittedly has a solid coaching resume – but they'll have to do it on the fly instead of over the summer and in the preseason. If this is only about getting a better guy in there, it should have been done in the offseason. But that's right, then they wouldn't have had as much time to film all those commercials. It all makes sense now. • Did Roberto Luongo suffer a setback at practice for the Vancouver Canucks? [Vancouver Sun] • Finally ... yes, all of this rough stuff between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Buffalo Sabres was fun last night. But it's just another needless brawl after a clean check. (H/T to PD reader Vance.)
