According to a feature in the July 6, 2009 issue of the Sporting News called "SN's 2009-10 Power Poll," the Washington Wizards rank third in the NBA, just behind the reigning champion L.A. Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The reason given for that ranking is even more hilarious than the ranking itself: "The Wizards picked up Miller Miller and Randy Foye for a draft pick, girding them against the injuries that tore them down last season." Miller and Foye? That duo vaults the Wizards ahead of the Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs and Boston Celtics? I don't know what they are smoking/injecting over at SN, but whatever it is has very strong hallucinogenic properties. If things break right then the Wizards have a good shot at making the playoffs...

One of the benefits of the Heat's current roster is the enormity of its expiring contracts. O'Neal is on the books for $23 million for this coming season. Blount for $8 million. And it doesn't end there. Udonis Haslem is in the final year of a contract that pays $7.1 million for 2009-10. Dorell Wrig...

Kind of strange how Hedo, a crucial cog in the Magic's run to the NBA Finals, ends up with the Raptors right after he gets replaced in Orlando by Vince Carter. And while some may blanche at the team giving $50 million plus to a thirty-year-old, even the faintest notion that he got pushed out the...

THE `BURBS - Don't tell Pacers coach Jim O'Brien summer league games are meaningless. It looks like former Pacers first-round pick David Harrison is attempting a comeback. Things are relatively quiet on the Pacers' free agent front these days.

Point-counterpoint: Shaq is gone. Assuming Amaré Stoudemire is also dealt, should the Suns trade Steve Nash as well before his contract runs out at the end of next season? I hope not.

Jared Jordan — Those looking for a true point guard to help the Warriors may find one in Jared Jordan. The 6-2 Marist College product led the nation in assists for two years and was snagged by the Clippers in the 2007 second round. He spent the last two preseasons in the Knicks and Hornets camp...

Joe Dumars fires a coach. When will Dumars' noggin join them? Maybe Joe should coach the Pistons himself. Then Rick Carlisle, whose belly was simply bursting with fire, was hired. But Flip Saunders rubbed the players the wrong way, eventually. So Dumars hired Curry after just one season as Saunders' assistant. A 39-43 record. An embarrassing sweep at the hands of the formerly-tormented Cleveland Cavaliers. A complete loss of the players' respect. Rip Hamilton, by the way, disappointed me. Dumars is an anomaly. Speculation is that the still-green Curry was an obstacle to players signing with the Pistons. The Pistons' Engine Has Been Rebuilt!"

With a second-round pick, McClinton might be worth a shot. But what the Heat needs is for Cook and Jones to get their acts together and offer them in tandem on the court, Jones on one wing and Cook on the other, to play off the double-teams of Jermaine O'Neal and the penetration of Dwyane Wade.

Here's an excerpt of Smith's reasoning: I've never fully understood the supposed Pistons interest. Not because teams don't like Gordon. But because the Pistons have Rodney Stuckey, not a true point guard, and Richard Hamilton. ... Report: Detroit Pistons promised $11 million to Ben Gordon M...

1) Ariza proved that he could accept his limited role, while Artest has often tried to be his team's number one offensive option even when he had teammates who were better suited to do so. Clearly, Bryant should be the Lakers' number one offensive option and Pau Gasol should be the number two offensive option. Lamar Odom has flourished as the third option but the shot distribution dynamic will be interesting to watch in 2009-10; will Odom accept possibly dropping to the fourth option and will Artest be content as either the third or fourth option? This was not an issue with Ariza because he knew that he could not create shots, but Artest likes to have the ball in his hands even though his shot selection can be highly questionable at times.
